This is a original Hone O Drive overdrive unit in very good condition. These units were very expensive when new and they are extremely hard to find today, especially in this very nice original condition.

Hone Overdrive units are well known for being installed in Baldwin Motion Supercars, Shelby Mustangs and Cobras, as well as other high performance cars of the 60's and 70's. They allowed a car with high revving strip gears to be comfortable driven to the track. They also allowed the top speed of high performance muscle cars to be significantly increased.

The Hone overdrive unit is a self-contained, fully lubricated, 2-speed synchromesh planetary transmission that is manually shifted from 1:1 direct drive to a 1.43:1 overdrive. This effective changes a car with a 4.11 rear axle ratio into one with a 2.87 ratio. Engagement/disengagement is available at any time with no neutral or freewheeling. You just ease off the throttle for a moment, to lighten the drivetrain load, and then move the shift lever. Yes, this unit can be shifted while you are driving the car just as you shift gears with a manual transmission!

This original Hone overdrive unit is in excellent condition. This just came out of the estate of a long time hot rodder. The family did not know anything about it. It is very clean and may be unused. I am selling it as used to be on the safe side. The case is in excellent shape with no damage others than some scuffs and scratches from being moved around over the years. It is in its original finish and has never been sand or bead blasted. The units spins over smoothly with no slop or binding and shifts well. I don't have the shifter or linkage but most applications use simple fabricated pieces anyway. The unit will also require a crossmember. Most I have seen are made from angle iron or square tubing available at most metal supply stores. Finding an original Hone-O-Drive unit in this condition is becoming near impossible. Treat yourself to this awesome toy.
