This is an original 1967 Muncie 4 Speed M20 wide ratio transmission.  These transmissions have a stellar reputation due to their tried and true performance and ease of use. The M-20 wide ratio transmission has a 2.52 first gear. Many guys think they want to M21 or M22 close ratio transmission with the 2.20 first gear. The fact is, most cars perform better with the M-20 wide ratio trans. If you have a 3.73 or numerically lower rearend gear, you will be much better off the the M-20 versus the close ratio Muncie. This is because the lower first gear allows the car to get off the line without loading up and struggling as it would with the close ratio trans.

This M-20 transmission looks to be in good original core condition. It was recently purchased from the estate of a long time hot rodder. All gears but first gear look excellent with no chipped teeth, pitting, etc. FIRST GEAR HAS CHIPPED TEETH AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I see no repairs, or modifications to this transmission. All 4 mounting ears are very nice. All threads are in good shape with the exception of one shifter mounting thread and one trans mount thread need attention. The transmission spins through all 4 forward gears and reverse smoothly with no binding or sloppiness. The internals look very nice with the exception of first gear which is chipped. The sliders move freely like the locks has been removed or are not working properly  This is simply a very nice original M-20 transmission that should be rebuilt before use.

The casting number on the main case of this transmission is 3885010 as shown. The 3885010 case was used in the 1966 and 1967 model years. The assembly stamp reads P7C29 which decodes as March 29th, 1967. One unique thing about this transmission is there is no VIN stamped anywhere on it. That makes this transmission the next best thing to having your factory installed transmission. The tail housing has the casting number 3857584. The side cover is casting number 3884685 and the front bearing retaining carries the number 3915020 as shown. The case is bare aluminum and is free of paints and coatings. This trans looks as sweet as cherry pie.
