During normal operation, the airbag control module is constantly monitoring data from various sensors and systems throughout the vehicle. Some of this information can include vehicle speed, occupant detection, brake use, deceleration force, seat belt use, and more. As soon as impact is detected, the airbag control module will make a split-second decision on which SRS components to deploy based on the data it receives.

The airbag system on your vehicle is critically important in protecting you and your passengers during an accident. An illuminated airbag light indicates that there is a problem with your airbag system and may disable SRS functions. It is not advisable to operate your vehicle with your airbag light on. All active SRS faults will need to be addressed (e.g. if your seat belt is deployed, it will also need to be sent in for a repair, if your impact sensor is damaged, it will need to be replaced, etc.).

Resetting your airbag module will not override existing SRS faults and is not a cure-all for all SRS issues; the codes will return until they are addressed. The best way to determine which SRS codes/faults you have is to scan the vehicle with an OBD2 scan tool.

Airbag Control Module Location

If you need to remove the airbag control module from your vehicle but don't know where it's located, this guide can help! Listed below are the top three locations where you may find the airbag control module in your vehicle. There's a good chance that someone has already done it in the past and documented it in a forum post, photo guide, or video tutorial. Do at your own risk! We cannot speak to the credibility of these tutorials. When in doubt, we always recommend following the service manual guide on removing the airbag control module. Common industry practice is to always have the battery disconnected when removing/installing SRS components.  Yellow connectors will generally indicate that a component is part of the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System).

★**Airbag Module Reset Tier 2 Disclosure**★

Some advanced airbag control modules store crash data in the MCU Processor. These units require additional programming and labor to be successfully reset. In this event, there will be a $20 upcharge added to the original reset cost. If you would like to know ahead of time if your unit is subject to the Tier 2 Upgrade Fee, please message us a picture and/or part number of the SRS Unit and we will let you know promptly.

Any tampering of the SRS Unit before or after the reset will void our included warranty. We do not work on flooded modules. Modules that are physically damaged (broken connectors, damaged casing, etc.) are subject to a rejection of repairs.

What's the Difference Between SRS Codes and Crash Data?

SRS codes will generally point to active or current SRS faults found in the vehicle. This includes deployed seat belts, damaged sensors, wiring issues, etc. Most of the time, you can see a high/low resistance or open/short circuit description for these components.

Crash data is permanent history that gets stored in the airbag control module after an accident. It is encoded in complex format that cannot be cleared or read by ordinary OBD2 scan tools. You may only get a generic description outlining the data as STORED or HISTORY codes.

Though it's not always the case, a flashing SRS light is indicative of SRS codes, whereas a solid SRS light is indicative of crash data history.

What is an OPDS or OCS Unit?

If you scan your vehicle with an OBD2 scanner, you may come across an OPDS or OCS code.  The OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System) or OCS (Occupant Classification System) generally refers to a sensor, or a series of sensors, located in the front passenger seat. The primary purpose of this system is to detect the presence of a passenger to help determine whether or not to deploy the passenger airbags or seat belts.

This is generally related into the "Passenger Airbag OFF" indicator light that you may see on your control panel. If you are getting codes for the OPDS/OCS unit, it may need to be re-calibrated. This is generally done with an OBD2 scan tool.

My Module Shows Internal Failure, Can You Still Reset It?

In most cases, an internal failure of the module means the module itself is faulty and is not able to be reset. This can be for a variety of reasons, but typically, it is due to one or more components inside the module being faulty after the airbag deployment sequence. At that point, we'd recommend looking for a new or used replacement module.

Can I Mail My Seat Belts Together With My Module in the Same Box?

Yes! That is totally fine, you may mail all of your parts together in one box, just make sure to package your contents securely to avoid any damage during transit.

SRS codes or SRS DTCs are different than Crash Data History.
