A fuel pump is used to pump fuel from the gas tank to the engine. For older vehicles that have a carburetor, the pump transfers gas from the fuel tank to the engine under low pressure, while in newer, fuel-injected vehicles, the pump transfer fuel under high pressure. Often, carbureted engines use low pressure mechanical pumps that are mounted outside the fuel tank, whereas fuel injected engines often use electric fuel pumps that are mounted inside the fuel tank. Some fuel injected engines have two fuel pumps: one low pressure/high volume pump in the tank and one high pressure/low volume pump on or near the engine.
