The alternator converts the engine's mechanical energy into alternating electrical current. A belt attached to a pulley at the front of the engine is connected to a pulley on the alternator. Tension on the belt is adjusted by moving the alternator bracket and securing it in place with a bolt. If there isn't enough tension on the belt, the belt will slip on either pulley and thee alternator will not rotate, thus it will not produce electricity.
