On cars with carburetors the air cleaner assembly is usually round and located on top of the carburetor. A wing nut usually attaches a top plate to the assembly for easy access to the filter.

On newer cars the assembly is usually a square or rectangular black plastic box with about a four inch diameter hose coming out of it. A screwdriver is usually needed to access the filter.
